Italy Confirms Troop Request for Gaza

(MENAFN) Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that Italian military units have been asked to assist in future rebuilding or transitional operations in Gaza and Palestine, according to local media reports on Monday.

Tajani made these comments while visiting Italian personnel stationed at a support base in Djibouti and aboard the frigate Antonio Marceglia, where he celebrated Christmas with the troops, a news agency reported.

“Like all your colleagues serving around the world, you are bearers of peace,” Tajani told the soldiers.

“Italian troops are needed everywhere. Our presence has been requested for Gaza and Palestine during any future reconstruction or transitional phase. This is similar to the recognition our forces have received in Serbia, Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro,” he added.

He emphasized the adaptability and operational strength of Italian forces, highlighting their capacity to function in varied environments.

Tajani also pointed out Italy’s strategic economic interests in the Red Sea, noting that 40% of the nation’s maritime trade passes through the area. Italian forces are currently part of the European Union’s Aspides mission, launched in February 2024 to safeguard maritime security in the region.

On broader stability, Tajani cautioned about unrest in Sudan, warning that it could trigger irregular migration flows toward Italy.
